2010 Grants Awarded
The Doctors Company Foundation has awarded the following grants:
November 2010—The Lucian Leape Institute was awarded $55,000 to partner with The Doctors Company Foundation in sponsoring six annual patient safety awards. The Doctors Company Foundation Young Physicians Patient Safety Award will be awarded annually to six third and fourth year medical students and first year residents who write an essay about the most instructional patient safety event they have personally experienced during their clinical rotations. The essays will be judged by the National Patient Safety Foundation and each winner will receive $5,000.
November 2010—The University of Washington Department of Medicine received their second payment of $44,747 to support a project entitled “Talking with Parents About Birth Injuries.” The research team will interview parents who have experienced an adverse event resulting in birth injury and conduct focus groups with pediatric and obstetric physicians in order to enhance disclosure communications following adverse birth outcomes.
October 2010—The National Patient Safety Foundation received $25,000 to sponsor the Lucian Leape Institute Town Hall Plenary Session at the 2011 National Patient Safety Foundation Congress taking place in Washington, D.C.
October 2010—Scripps Health received the second of six annual grants of $5,000 to sponsor The Doctors Company Foundation Thomas A. Waltz, MD, Memorial Lecture on “Quality in Health Care” at the annual Scripps Health Quality Summit.
August 2010—The Cleveland Clinic Foundation was awarded $307,587 to be paid out over three years to support their Heart Care at Home Development Research Program. This initiative aims to manage patient risk more effectively, improve patient safety, enhance patient outcomes, and create a model to help older patients with chronic illnesses more easily transition from hospital to home with fewer readmissions.
July 2010—The American Academy of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery Foundation was awarded $30,000 to support the patient safety curriculum in the Business of Medicine Educational Track to be presented at the 2010 AAO-HNSF Annual Meeting & OTO EXPO.
July 2010—The California Medical Association Foundation received a grant for $5,000 to support their 2010 Ethnic Physicians Leadership Summit. This summit will focus on healthcare reform and health information technology.
July 2010—The California Medical Association Foundation received $12,000 to support their 5th Annual Medical Student Leadership Conference. This conference will focus on the impacts of health care reform and patient safety. The Doctors Company Foundation funded white paper entitled, “Unmet Needs: Teaching Physicians to Provide Safe Patient Care” will be presented by Dr. David Mayer.
July 2010—The Healthcare Safety Research Institute received $50,000 to help support the one-day educational symposium,“The Hidden Value of Malpractice Data.” This symposium will help participants uncover the elements of malpractice risk reduction, which include accurate risk identification; evidence-based resource allocation; effective intervention development and the provision of safer patient care.
July 2010—The Institute for Healthcare Improvement received $50,000 to support the IHI Open School for Health Professionals. The IHI Open School offers tuition-free courses online to teach the skills needed to become change agents in healthcare improvement: quality improvement, patient safety, teamwork, leadership and patient-centered care.
April 2010—The ABG Anesthesia Research Institute received a grant in the amount of $129,800 to be paid over two years to support an analysis of “Perioperative Outcomes in Anesthesiology” utilizing the Anesthesia Data Group's national anesthesia registry. The analysis will create a risk adjustment and outcome assessment to account for differences in patient risk factors so that patient outcomes can be used as an indicator of quality of care.
April 2010—The California Medical Association Foundation received a grant in the amount of $10,000 to support their Medical Student Leadership Grant Program, in order to support medical student run clinics.
April 2010—The San Diego County Medical Society Foundation received a grant of $80,000 to be paid over two years to support “Project Access San Diego.” This grant will protect the safety of patients by ensuring compliance with treatment plans; coordinating hand offs between primary care providers, specialists and hospitals; and following up with patients to review physician orders and prescriptions.

January 2010—The Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation received the third of five annual grants of $5,000 to sponsor the Ann S. Lofsky, MD Research Award. This research award was established in memory of Ann S. Lofsky, MD, a former board member of The Doctors Company.
