
The Doctors Company Foundation has awarded the following grants:
December 2009—James P. Bagian, MD, was awarded the Vanguard Award for the Advancement of Patient Safety. He is director of the National Center for Patient Safety in the Department of Veterans Affairs. Utilizing his medical knowledge, engineering background and familiarity with aviation's culture of safety, Dr. Bagian developed and implemented systems-based approaches to identify areas of vulnerability and prevent adverse medical events. The award includes a monetary grant of $1,000.
October 2009—The University of Washington Department of Medicine received a grant in the amount of $89,747 to be paid over two years to support a project entitled “Talking with Parents About Birth Injuries.” The research will conduct four focus groups with parents who have experienced adverse events resulting in birth injuries and four focus groups with pediatric and obstetric physicians in order to enhance disclosure communications following adverse birth outcomes.
August 2009—Tulane University School of Medicine was awarded a grant in the amount of $86,341 payable over two years to support a project entitled “Simulation Analysis of Adverse Outcomes: Determination of Root Cause.” Simulation analysis of selected malpractice claims will determine the root causes of adverse outcomes involving systems, healthcare delivery methods, team interactions, and communication. This data will be used to develop a training and education curriculum for healthcare providers.
August 2009—The Medical Society of Virginia Foundation (MSV) received a grant in the amount of $25,000 to underwrite an annual $1,200 Salute to Service Award for Advancing Patient Safety and Quality Improvement to a Virginia physician.
August 2009—The American Academy of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery Foundation (AAO-HNSF) received a $30,000 grant to sponsor eight mini-seminars on Patient Safety at their Annual Meeting in October 2009.
July 2009—The California Medical Association Foundation received a grant in the amount of $5,000 for their 2009 Ethnic Physicians Leadership Summit to support sessions related to Patient Safety.
March 2009—The Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation received the second of five annual grants of $5,000 to sponsor the Ann S. Lofsky, MD, Research Award. This research award was established in memory of Ann S. Lofsky, MD, a former board member of The Doctors Company.
March 2009—The Lucian Leape Institute was awarded a grant for $25,000 to co-sponsor the Lucian Leape Institute Town Hall Plenary Session, “Institute of Medicine Report Retrospective and the Decade Ahead,” at the 2009 National Patient Safety Foundation Congress.
March 2009—Scripps Health was awarded a grant in the amount of $30,000, payable at $5,000 per year, in memory of Thomas A. Waltz, MD, a former board member of The Doctors Company. The grant sponsors The Doctors Company Foundation Thomas A. Waltz, MD, Memorial Lecture on “Quality in Health Care” at the Scripps Health Quality Summit.
February 2009—The California Medical Association Foundation received a grant in the amount of $10,000 for a project awarding individual grants to medical students to encourage community leadership development and promote health in their communities.
