The University of Illinois Institute for Patient Safety Excellence held their Seventh Annual Telluride Patient Safety Educational Roundtable, “Dilemmas Surrounding Medical Errors and Adverse Events.” Twenty qualified medical students spent one week in Telluride, Colorado, learning effective communication skills to overcome the multiple barriers to transparency.

The Doctors Company Foundation Ann S. Lofsky, MD Research Award was presented by the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation to Jesse M. Ehrenfeld, MD, for his study entitled Enhancing Perioperative Safety Through the Determination of Intraoperative Predictors of Post-Operative Deterioration. Dr. Ehrenfeld is an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and Biomedical Informatics at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, as well as an Assistant-in-Anesthesia at Massachusetts General Hospital.

The Doctors Company Foundation, in partnership with the Lucian Leape Institute, announced the six winning essays for the 2011 Young Physicians Patient Safety Award. The winning essays, chosen by the National Patient Safety Foundation from 87 essays submitted, describe the most instructional patient safety event the student or resident has personally experienced during clinical rotations. Each winner received $5,000 and a certificate at the 13th Annual National Patient Safety Foundation Patient Safety Congress in Washington, DC. The winners consisted of three fourth-year medical students, two third-year medical students, and one first-year resident. The winning essays came from the Mayo Medical School; the University of Massachusetts Medical School; the University of Illinois at Chicago; the University of Virginia; the Boston University School of Medicine; and UConn Medical, Harvard School of Public Health.
